The Goodness Of Pleasure

Instead of distracting from one's relationship with God, pleasure is a valuable thing that is an integral part of an ideal relationship with God.  Christendom is in dire need of the recognition that God created humans for pleasure--not for a hedonistic indulgence that regards pleasure as what defines that which is good, but for the experience of the pleasures of an untainted existence where God himself walks among us.  God created humans so that we could experience the pleasure of relationships with himself, with other humans, and even with animals, as well as the joys of intellectual, spiritual, and sensual realities. 

The pleasures God fashioned us for are as diverse as they are powerful: friendship, sexual expression, music, originality, humor, entertainment, creativity, intellectual discovery, self-development, and food are just a handful of examples.  Because God made people to be autonomous individuals, a given person's affinity for a particular pleasure might be far weaker or stronger than that of another person.  The experience of pleasure is subjective.  However, some things that can generate pleasure are objectively more significant than others.  For instance, a love of reason, of God, or of friendship is a love of something that matters more than other things that can provide pleasure.

Some pleasures pertain strictly to the mind or its grasp of the external laws of reason (though all experiences of pleasure require a perceiving mind and that mind's grasp of the independent, external laws of logic to even be experienced at all), and some pertain to both the mind and the senses.  Concerning the latter, there is nothing shameful about many sensual pleasures that have been illicitly opposed by misguided Christians who chose asceticism over rationality [1].  At the same time, genuine intellectual pleasures are known only by a scarce handful of Christians; if this were not the case, the church at large would not be adrift in such an asinine intellectual stupor.

Both mental/intellectual pleasures and sensual pleasures are good as long as they do not entail the violation of any moral obligations.  The Biblical creation account clearly specifies that God created both the human mind and the human body, calling each "very good" (Genesis 1:31).  Any theology that devalues either the mind (consciousness/spirit) or the body is a heretical construct of fallacious minds.  When one realizes that God intentionally created people with the capacity for miscellaneous pleasures of the spirit and pleasures of the body, it should become easier to shed any reluctance to indulge in nonsinful forms of both.

Christian morality does not simply not condemn pleasure itself: pleasure is the reason God created humans in the first place.  A right relationship with God is the pleasure that grounds lesser human pleasures, anchoring them to the one who conjured them into existence.  Hedonism is merely a perversion of the desire for fulfillment that can only be constructively met by a right understanding of reality, and a right understanding of reality requires accurate theology.

New OGRE Units Almost Done

So this is part of what I have been trying to finish off. Six Combine Heavyy Tanks, a pair of Superheavies, and a trio/battery of Mobile Howitzers.

All painted to be part of the 301st Armoured, 1st Battalion. Heavy Tanks in Number 1 Company, Super heavy in Number 3 Company, and SP howitzers in Number 6 Company. I may one day fill in Number 2 Company with more Heavy and Number 4 Company with Light Tanks. Number 5 Company is Mechanized Infantry, of course. And that makes a nice Combined Arms Battalion design. It would be kinda cool to field an organized battalion.

6Th Annual After Essen Party!

Six years ago, my friend Michael from the Spielwiese gaming cafe agreed to help me bring a little bit of SPIEL back from Essen and celebrate in his cafe with all the great new games released there--many of them from Berlin designers.

The photo galleries on my After Essen Party page show some of the fun from the past five years.  As you can see, it has been a great mix of games and guests from around the world, and we can even claim that Spiel des Jahres (German Game of the Year) award winner Qwirkle was discovered here!

As always, the 6th Annual After Essen Party is open to the public, athough space is limited and it is best to come early.  Visiting designers are welcome to show their newly released games as well (please, no prototypes, however).  Feel free to contact me or Michael at the Spielwiese in advance (especially if you are a game designer or publisher).  The party is on the Tuesday after SPIEL, beginning at 7 p.m.  Hope to see you at SPIEL and at the party in Berlin afterwards!

Final Fantasy 6 Review

Final Fantasy 6, or known as 3 in North America, is one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It  certainly ranks high on the nostalgia factor, and many iconic moments in Final Fantasy history are portrayed in this game. An unforgettable cast of characters, top-notch graphics for the time, a stunning soundtrack and an intriguing storyline keep the player hooked till the very end.  How does it hold up from a Christian perspective?

Very well, actually.  Though there are some moments that are questionable, mainly that one of the final bosses is based on the Virgin Mary, the plot throughout the game more than makes up for it.  Unlike FF9, which views souls as recyclable and life as meaningless, FF6 seems to incorporate more of the biblical worldview, or at least, not anti-biblical. Many of the characters face losses but deal with them in ways that are more consistent with Scripture—Locke feels remorse over the death of his first love, Rachel, believing he couldn't protect her.   He resolves his guilt at the end and decides to move onto his new love. Cyan loses his wife and child and is nearly destroyed, but receives his courage back, believing he must move on and leave the past in the past.  He later becomes a powerful asset to the party, although the Dreamscape sequence in the World of Ruin with Cyan is somewhat creepy. Celes tries to commit suicide after the loss of her only family member, but regains her courage and gathers the party back together.  Though the reason why she should not commit suicide is not addressed, the fact that she is able to recover, move on, and reunite the party shows why we should not. 

The star of the show, though, I feel is Terra. Terra is, in many ways, quite similar to Christ. First of all, her Japanese name, Tina, is actually a shortening of Christina, a feminine form of Christ's name. She is also half human and half esper, and bridges the gap between them, much like Jesus bridges the gap between God and man.  Terra also desires to learn what love is, and finds it not in a carnal way, but in protecting the children in Mobliz. Terra is also unjustly accused and persecuted during the course of the game. At the end, Terra even offers to sacrifice herelf for the party, but remains on earth as a human, in a somewhat interesting parallel to Christ's resurrection. 

Those who begrudge Final Fantasy females such as Aeris and Rinoa should look to Terra and Celes. Both women are strong female protagonists that overcome personal and exterior difficulties to emerge as leaders, Terra in the first half and Celes in the second.  Both are amazing women that complement each other and even form a friendship.

Kefka is also an interesting counterpart to Satan. Saying he wants to destroy all and create a monument to nonexistence is exactly what Satan wishes to do—in Jesus's words 'the thief comes but to steal, kill and destroy.' What words better sum up Kefka Palazzo?  The first scene of him shows him 'destroying' Terra's innocence and ordering her to 'kill kill kill!' The second scene has Kefka 'stealing' General Leo's authority over the Doman mission, killing many with poision, and 'destroying' Cyan's life. His horrors do not end here, as in the interlude on the Floating Continent, Kefka commands the warring triad to strike down Emperor Gestahl so Kefka can rule- an allegory to Satan trying to usurp God. Kefka is later known as destruction and seems to be completely evil with no redeeming qualities, unlike villians such as Golbez or Sephiroth, who at least showed remorse or motive.

The end of the game shows the cast finding joy in spite of the fact the world is nearly dead. Terra has found love. Locke and Celes have found each other. Cyan carries his family inside of him. Gau has his friends. Sabin and Edgar have each other. Setzer has his dream After threatening to destroy  all their dreams and hopes, Terra counters that life continues and that it's not the end result of life that matters, but the day to day joys of life and love. 

Is FF6 perfect? No. But in comparison to the poison of FF7's recyclable souls and FF9's 'our memories live on', it's a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.

The CollectorVision Phoenix - An FPGA Console Behind The Times?

The ColecoVision has a very driven fan community.  I did not own one and really do not share the love that those who do or did have, but nonetheless it is a classic gaming system that has new products and peripherals released for it.  The idea of recreating the Coleco in a modern, updated console, has long been talked about.  Currently, no less than three different groups have announced some kind of FPGA-based Coleco.  One of those project, called the CollectorVision Phoenix, is now accepting funding on kickstarter.  Let's look into the Phoenix's campaign and features and I will explain why I think you should give this FPGA console a pass.

God And The Machine

Two and a half years ago, I began blogging here in order to create a space where I could write about all kinds of games, any time I want, however I want. Since then, I've built a small but loyal audience interested in the same thing, and I thank you for staying with me as I adjust to changing demands brought on, first, by my return to graduate school, and then by various family illnesses.

In case you're wondering: no, I'm not closing down State of Play. Posting will continue to be lean until I find some balance among everything I need to do, and while I work to get a new project up and running. But I will continue to make this a place for my game coverage.

That new project is also a blog. It's called God and the Machine, and it's hosted at Patheos, a portal dedicated to intelligent discussions about the entire sweep of religious issues. My contribution covers "Technology, Culture, and Catholicism," which is a pretty broad mandate. The official launch was Monday, and I've already posted on subjects ranging from the HHS contraception mandate to the LulzSec arrests.

I've always made clear on these pages that I'm politically conservative (not Republican) and Catholic, but since it's a game site, I never have (and never will) make that the thrust of my posts here. That will not be the case at God and the Machine, which will tackle more controversial issues. While I've always made an effort to keep State of Play a family friendly site, particularly since I know I have young readers, those limitations can't apply to God and the Machine simply because of the nature of the subject matter.
